Deep Southwest
Around this time in 2024, we received a call from long time friends and creative muses Megan and Pat Whalen. They were pitching Bell Fibe TV to produce a comedy series they had been quietly writing for a few months. This is the sort of project that you dream about. Goofing off with friends in our home town, and getting paid to do it. That may be an oversimplification, because we are all hard workers who dream big, and rarely put reasonable goals on paper. This was to be a series that celebrates the community we love, highlights the places, businesses, and people we love, and all the while slapping our knees through every inside joke. A One of a Kind scenario from every angle.
Ever since starting One of A Kind Productions, the goal was to build upon the skills, equipment, and personnel to have the resources to execute a situation exactly like this. And now it was all happening.
From the first script reviews and pre production meetings, to the long days filming, to editing the final credit roll, our team was able to put our stamp on every stage of the process. Proving something? Perhaps. Flexing? Possibly. It’s not an exaggeration that this was a major milestone we were working toward since choosing this crazy industry.
Then we premiered it. A local theatre, weeks of well wishers saying ‘I’ll be there’. The reality of a small town is that 50% of the ‘I’ll be there’s’ often end up entangled in other commitments or simply forget. You grow to accept it. Nothing prepared us for what would transpire on March the 8th, 2025.
The crowd blew our minds. They showed up. They laughed, cried, and cheered when they saw their friends and neighbours on the big screen. It was like an out of body experience, seeing every person that has lent a hand or simply wished you good luck when heading off to a shoot. THIS is why we do it. THIS is why we believe Chatham-Kent is like no other place. We have each others backs. We cheer each other on and offer a shoulder when there’s something to cry about. The picture above is 10 years of Blood, Sweat and Tears coming together and inspiring so much more.
